We've noticed an increase on the number of so-called 'police auctions' information auctions on ebay. From doing some research, there doesn't seem to be many that are worthwhile and that actually provide you much of a discount (i'm not sure if anybody has ever been to an actual police auction, they can be misleading). The whole concept of selling information in auctions on ebay is a violation in itself, but the fact that scammers make a ton of money off of people in them, just isn't right.

Regardless, we found a rather distressing auction today that goes along the lines of the way that matrix site owners used to scam ebay consumers:

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Apple-iPod-Video-30-GB-30GB-MP3-1-day-auction_W0QQitemZ320013700082QQihZ011QQcategoryZ10 4138QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Here is some of the text, for when it does get removed:

Happy Bidding!!!

This listing complies with Ebay rules and regulations!

Please Note This auction is for information only, it isn't for the Apple iPod Video 30GB MP3 Player!

We're hoping that the auction doesn't stay open for long after being reported, but basically they are selling information (which is an ebay violation), and a sorry consumer has the bidding up to over $188USD at this point, just for information. Another tactic they use is to only have it as a one day auction so that ebay doesn't have time to shut them down.

Buyers need to continue to be aware of these fraudulent auctions so that you don't get ripped off. Its critical to READ the entire auction and see what they are really offering before placing bids on it!!!

Anyone in the U.K. who wants to skip paying a seller on e-bay for this free information try the following links as a starting point if Police and government auctions are of interest:

http://www.police-information.co.uk/Docs/policeauctions/

http://www.bumblebeeauctions.co.uk/XcAuctionPro.asp

Or use Google to search for auctions in connection with Police, Government, receivers, bailiffs, etc etc.

Or even call your local Police Station who may be able to give more up to date information.

These are very misleading auctions as all the details and photo of a very desirable NON Existing electronics device is listed right at the top.

Unfortuneately in their excitment to bid many people do not read all the details below where it says that this auction is for information only and the physical item is NOT included.

The seller has already received one negative for this kind of auction and a mutually withdrawn sale for a positive comment.

This auction is against eBays policy and preys on uneducated bidders.
These kind of tatics never last too long as negative feedbacks will accumulate rapidly with the seller either making their feedback hidden or being banned by eBay.
However many auctions can be completed before this happens.....let the buyer beware

If ebay prohibit the sale of ebooks why are there always thousands for sale? If they were more vigorous in deleting them they would wipe out the practice a bit quicker.
One possible scam I saw recently was an ebook roulette system costing 1p. The system doesn't work long term and I think the scam comes from casino links. Someone signs up through a link, loses money and the seller gets their affiliate fee. I've also seen the system given free on various sites and one version had FIVE casino links and insisted these were the only places it worked due to a glitch in the casinos software. It also said playing for fun was no use because the numbers were generated locally within your own computer. Very sneaky.

I did report this type of auction, but gave up, as ebay have never removed a single one i reported.

ebay.uk has 100's of these scam listings running at any one time.

I have some experience with police/government auctions. Most of the people that hype these auctions claim that extravagent vehicles and homes sell for extremely low prices. The fact of the matter is that this is not true! Rather than luxurious Ferrari's at these auctions, you're more likely to find a beat-up Ford Tauras! As for homes, lots of trailers. Once in awhile you find a single family home....but the prices are far from cheap. House auction start prices start around their book value.
