Exclamation YMMSS-Success Through Advertising Consumer Movement

ADMINISTRATIVE UPDATE: These MatrixWatch forums are currently closed, but you can report and discuss suspicious websites & eBay auctions at the new MatrixWatch site. YMMSS discussion is now happening here. If you search for a scam and find that it has already been reported, then flag it to bring it toward the top of the list. Use the MatrixWatch Watchlist to tell others what scams to avoid online.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The YMMSS / STA Consumer Movement

The goal of Matrixwatch is to provide a gathering place for victims of all types of scams. When victims of a scam come together, great things can happen. With that in mind, I am creating this thread to bring together the victims the YMMSS-Success Through Advertising scam.

YMMSS(Your Money Machine Success System) was officially launched by Kim Inman on June 11, 2002 after what he claimed was a seven month odyssey to design a perfect business model where there would be "all winners and no losers". By promising to pay back double each "advertising purchase" that members made every 60-90 days, YMMSS silently became what was perhaps one of the largest doubler/Ponzi schemes ever on the internet.

Although mathematically impossible to sustain for generations as promised by Kim Inman, YMMSS was able to maintain its 60-90 day money doubling guarantee for nearly 2 1/2 years by recruiting approximately 25,000 members into the scheme, claiming payouts of around $100 million to its members. Due to the way payouts were calculated, actual cash paid to members has been figured to be significantly less than 50% of that total.

In late November 2004, the impossible math of perpetual doubling finally started the inevitable crash of the system. Despite Kim Inman's continuous statements that they would eventually return to 60-90 day cycles and promises to add his own reserve funds that were set aside especially for the purpose of keeping within the 90 day cycle, YMMSS was unable to keep its impossible promise and cycle times continued to spiral out of control.

As more and more negative comments began to be associated with the name YMMSS, they decided to shed the YMMSS moniker and try to remake themselves under the official company name of Success Through Advertising(STA).

Several compensation plan changes later, Success Through Advertising finally shed the doubler portion of its pay plan in July 2006. Unfortunately, the financial burden of the initial doubler/ponzi remains and thousands of affiliates are owed millions of dollars based on Kim Inman's early promises of paying them double their "advertising purchases" every 60-90 days.

Update: February 26, 2007 - YMMSS/STA closes down shop for good. As predicted, the business model could not sustain itself.

Did you invest in YMMSS-Success Through Advertising and lose money? There is something you can do about it. This document will outline the steps you can take to get justice for yourself and other victims of the YMMSS-Success Through Advertising scam.

Victims from any country are welcome!!!

Note: While the thread is going to be locked out from posts, I am going to periodically update it with useful information regarding the situation. Check this page often

#1: Register with MatrixWatch.com

If you haven't done so already, register with us here at MatrixWatch.com. It's free, quick and easy!

#2: Start grouping together

By joining any of the various consumer movements here at Matrixwatch, there is no expressed commitment. Additionally, there is no expressed intent of filing a lawsuit. Should a lawsuit be filed by a fraud victim, and we become aware of it, the list of victims contained herein will simply allow us to inform these victims of the potential lawsuit. For more information about how lawsuits work, click here.

Below we will keep the master-list of all victims of YMMSS. We envision using this list as a tool to show government authorities the true vastness of the YMMSS scam. If you lost money in YMMSS, you need to get on this list!

You may ask yourself, "why should I bother joining?". There are a few good reasons:
  • You'll ensure that you receive any communication from Matrixwatch on the YMMSS/STA topic. We send out newsletters regularly with updated information on the pursuit for justice.
  • Having a count of the number of victims, and the amount of money lost allows Matrixwatch to publicize the gravity of the situation. News organizations, for instance, are only interested in a scam if the number of victims and the amount of money lost is very high.
  • Showing your support for the consumer movement by signing up for it allows other victims to see that they aren't alone. Seeing dozens, or even hundreds of other people in the same boat gives a great sense of community.
  • Showing the agencies that have received complaints allows other victims to realize how loud their voice can be and give them strength to file complaints as well!

Private Message Matrixwatch Administrator Mercinary if you want to be added!!!

When requesting to be added to the list please include the following information in your PM*:
  • Your Matrixwatch.com login id (Mandatory)
  • Amount of money you lost **
  • Amount listed on bogus 1099 forms ***
  • Where you are from
  • Complaints you have filed

* - At your request, we will censor any given field(s) of the below information. The information still must be given, but will be kept private.

** - Note that "Net Dollars Lost" should reflect the amount of money lost in the scheme minus any gains. (eg: If you invested $10,000 but received a total of $8,000 then the amount reported as lost should be $2,000)

*** - Note that "Bogus 1099 Income" should reflect the amount of money indicated on any and all 1099s received from YMMSS/STA where you DID NOT actually make that much money. If you had some income from YMMSS/STA that was taxable, you need to deduct that from the total amount on the 1099 in order to list it here.

Total Number of YMMSS Victims: 232

#4: Start filing complaints

MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL

The administration of Matrixwatch is only a medium for bringing the perveyors of scams to Justice. We are not always the victims of scams, and therefore cannot file any complaints ourselves (or on the behalf of others). YOU, the victim, along with all the other victims, control your own destiny. Take 20 minutes and file a report with the following organizations. If you are on the list of victims above, you owe it to yourself and the rest of the victims. If everyone on the list files each of these complaints, things will start to happen fast. Act Now!!!

There are four types of people in the world:
  • Those that everything happens to.
  • Those who wonder what's happening.
  • Those who watch things happen.
  • Those who make things happen.

Don't be a victim...be someone who makes things happen!!!

To assist you, Matrixwatch provides a complaint letter template. In addition, Matrixwatch members have written two different template letters which can be utilized. These are not "Matrixwatch approved" per-se, but they are available for you:

Top priority: Victims of the YMMSS/STA scam need to IMMEDIATELY contact the Indiana Secretary of State Securities Division.

Once you have registered a complain with the Indiana Secretary of State Securities Division, please take a few minutes to file complaints with these other agencies. Remember, the more complaints that you file, the louder your voice is. When the victims of fraud band together they cease being victims, and become advocates for justice!

#5: Request a refund

For legal reasons, you should request a refund from YMMSS. You will almost certainly be denied a refund, but do it anyway. Save the response from YMMSS (if any).

#6: Contact local news organizations

Often times your local news company will have a "help the consumer" segment in which they expose consumer fraud. If you know of a program similar to this in you local area, go to the website of the tv station and send them an email about the matrix scam, and how you got wrapped up in it.

Two previous efforts in the YMMSS consumer movement were:

The following is a list of past press coverage on the YMMSS/STA scam:

#7: Start saving evidence

Although they might not be immediately handy, it would be in your favor to save the following items if you still have them:
  • Bank statements showing YMMSS related transactions
  • Credit Card statements showing YMMSS related transactions
  • Paypal (or other pay-processor) history printouts showing YMMSS related transactions
  • Emails (sent and/or received) from YMMSS
  • Cached copies of YMMSS (Use the "way back machine" at archive.org)
  • Archived audio or transcripts of the YMMSS/STA weekly conference calls.
  • Copies of early YMMSS/STA promotional material.

NEW! Matrixwatch has started a repository for this type of evidence. Please PM Mercinary if you have content that is worthy to be posted in the repository. Currently we have the following archived:

#9: Join the list of YMMSS/STA Civil Lawsuit Plaintiffs

The law firm "World Law Direct" has announced their intentions to file a civil lawsuit against Kim Inman. If you are a victim of this scam, please register your loss with WLD. Instructions to do so can be found at this link. Note that Matrixwatch is not affiliated with World Law Direct, so any questions about the lawsuit should be directed to WLD, not Matrixwatch.

Administrator Note: This post is for informational purposes only and in no way should be construed as giving 'tax advise' -- Matrix Watch does NOT provide tax advise and as such is NOT qualified or licensed to give TAX advise. Before doing anything mentioned (or referenced) in the below post PLEASE CONTACT THE IRS AND/OR A TAX PROFESSIONAL! You can also get more information on resolving tax disputes.

Did you Receive a 1099 from YMMSS/STA?

Due to YMMSS/STA affiliate (IBA's) receiving 1099 Misc. income statements (again) when they in fact have not received cash, income (or anything else of value) by STA there is increasing interest by those being scammed to dispute STA income claims and file IRS complaint form 3949 A

This post is an effort to pull together ALL resources, information and experiences of those who have already contacted the IRS and now filing 3949 A complaints.

Important IRS Complaint Information

Some IRS agents have encouraged STA participants NOT file schedule C, but to file their tax complaints and CALL them back after February 15th for further instructions. Read comments from Matrixwatch members in these threads:
